The Community Library
The UPAVIM library is the only public library in La Esperanza, open to all the community. It is employs one incredibly dedicated woman full-time, and she is responsible for overseeing all of the different services and programs that the library has to offer. Its books are available to the UPAVIM school, Reforzamiento, and visiting students from other schools and neighborhoods, and the librarian is also able to provide students with both a space to study and a computer with which to do internet research for homework assignments.
Each year, the UPAVIM library runs Aventuras en Literatura, or “Adventures in Literacy,” a unique summer reading program offered to students from La Esperanza and surrounding neighborhoods. This program is designed to help promote reading skills and a love of reading for children of all ages, many of whom would otherwise not have access to any books outside of school.
The recent completion of the fourth floor allowed the expantion of the library, allowing for a bigger work space and a larger book collection. There are also plans to begin offering a Storytime Hour each afternoon for the children from the community.
